Learning By Doing

WELCOME! TO SERVICE LEARNING SITE!

Service Learning refers to class-based projects in which students offer service to the larger community, where these projects are also related to learning objectives of the educational program or class.
Service Learning falls into a spectrum of pedagogical approaches which are based on integrating students? active experiences into the classroom.  These active approaches include experiential education, co-operative education, internships, and action-learning.  Service learning has also been called  "Community Based Learning."  A general definition of service learning is offered by Barbara Jacoby (Jacoby and Associates,  Service Learning in Higher Education, Jossey-Bass 1996).  They describe service learning as a "form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address the human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development.  Reflection and reciprocity are key concepts of service-learning."

The Academy of Management's 1999 Task Force on Service Learning suggested several features which characterize service learning/community involvement (hereafter called SL for simplicity).  These features include: 1. Course-relatedness; 2. Reflection; 3. Reciprocity; 4. Service to those in need (community, government, non-profit groups); 5. Faculty supervision. Fellows Announcement
